Olurotimi Badero

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has appointed United States-based physician Olurotimi John Badero as a Distinguished Fellow and Visiting Professor of Medicine in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Department of Medicine.

The university said the appointment recognises Badero’s pioneering work in both cardiology and nephrology, as well as his dedication to mentoring young medical professionals in Nigeria and abroad.

Badero is widely acknowledged as the world’s first and only board-certified interventional cardionephrologist, combining expertise in heart and kidney interventions. He is also the first known professor of medicine from Isonyin in Ogun State.

Currently based in Mississippi, he serves as Chief Executive Officer of Cardiac Renal and Vascular Associates in Jackson.

He also works part-time in Lagos as Clinical Head and Director of the Interventional Cardiology Programme and Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at Iwosan Lagoon Hospitals.

According to UNILAG, Badero’s return to Nigeria’s academic scene reflects a growing trend among diaspora professionals who are investing their global experience into local development.

“This milestone underscores the critical need for diaspora medical professionals to return and help build Nigeria’s healthcare and academic institutions. Prof. Badero’s appointment is expected to spark a wave of similar engagements, fostering a culture of knowledge exchange and national development,” the institution stated.

Iwosan Lagoon Hospitals described the appointment as a proud moment for Nigeria’s medical sector.

“We proudly celebrate Prof. Olurotimi John Badero’s prestigious appointment as Distinguished Fellow and Visiting Professor at the University of Lagos. This recognition speaks to his visionary contributions that continue to inspire both local and international medical communities,” the hospital said.

As a visiting professor, Badero will mentor residents and cardiology consultants, strengthen research partnerships and help align Nigeria’s medical training with global best practices.
