Celebrates two best-graduating students
For their contributions to academic and societal development, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) is set to honour three eminent Nigerians at its 55th convocation ceremony, billed to commence tomorrow.
The honourees include the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo–Iweala, astute businessman and co-founder of Guaranty Trust Bank, Fola Adeola, and Group Managing Director (GMD) of Sahara Power Group, Kolawole Adesina.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, who disclosed this to reporters, while briefing on the lined-up activities for the convocation, said the three awardees have distinguished themselves in scholarship, made ground-breaking discoveries, and contributed significantly to academic and societal development.
The institution will also honour two graduates with perfect scores of 5.0 Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPA) for the 2023/2024 academic session.
A total of 16,343 students will be graduating for the 2023/2024 academic session, including 6,658 from the postgraduate school. Of the figure, 561 bagged First Class, 3,916 Second Class Upper, 3,763 Second Class Lower; 1,143 Third Class; 78 Pass, while 223 received unclassified grades.
The Faculty of Management had the highest number of First Class with 175, followed by the Faculty of Science with 121 and the Faculty of Engineering with 61.
Ogunsola, while reeling out some of their achievements, said the institution signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with 14 universities across Africa, Europe, and the United States to foster collaboration in various academic areas like entrepreneurship, Artificial Intelligence (AI); Food security, Robotics, urban renewal, health diagnostics, among others.
Besides, the vice chancellor disclosed that the institution attracted grants worth about 4 billion in the outgone year.
