UNIMED commits to research, community service

Set to celebrate 10 years of exploits in health professions’ education
The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, has reiterated its commitment to further impact society positively with teaching, research, and community service-related activities.

It said that as the first specialised university of medical and health sciences in Nigeria, it is set to celebrate its 10 years of existence with the aim of trailblazing exploits in the health profession’s education in the coming weeks.

Public Relations Officer of the institution, Isaac Oluyi, who disclosed that the activities would be held December 4-14, 2024, said that the university, with its array of innovative programmes, had been a shining example in the last 10 years.

He said: “The university has produced three sets of medical doctors in less than 10 years of existence, a remarkable feat in the history of Nigeria’s medical science education. It has also assisted in introducing over 10 new programmes into Nigeria’s university curriculum in conjunction with the National Universities Commission (NUC). These and many other fists will be showcased in the course of the university’s 10th anniversary.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, while unveiling the programmes lined up for the anniversary, said: “We have opened up a new vista in health professions’ education, and we are convinced that our impacts in the last 10 years must not just be celebrated but documented for posterity.

“To this end, the university will enlighten and educate the public about the workings of the institution, showcase its achievements, and give room for members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm to ask questions in line with the Transparency, Efficiency, and Accountability (TEA) mantra of the university.

On his part, Chairman of the anniversary committee, Prof. Ogundahunsi, stressed that the anniversary would further impact society while celebrating 10 years of the university’s existence.

Ogundahunsi listed the activities lined up for the anniversary to include advocacy and stakeholders’ engagement, U-STEM competition for secondary schools, community health outreach, research and innovation programme, anniversary lecture, commissioning of projects, convocation, students’ competition on public speaking, and bestowment of awards on eminent personalities in the society, among others.
