Union describes calls for NiMeT’s DG sack as malicious

The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMeT) Joint Action Committee (NJAC)) has described as malicious the call for the sack of the Director General of the agency.

The union insisted that the staff’s demand is centred around improved welfare and not to remove anyone from office NJAC said: “We make bold to say that the report did not emanate from NJAC and was done in bad faith to discredit the unions in the fight for a better NiMet.”

The group said that most of the problems that made them embark on the strike were inherited by the present management, adding that the matter in question was receiving response from the Minister for Aviation and Aerospace, who stepped in to douse tense nerves.

NJAC said it has the highest regards for the DG/CEO despite the differences. The Deputy National President of the National Union of Air Transport Employee, Comrade Samuel Oluchi, who spoke on behalf of the group, maintained that the union protects jobs and does not want anyone to lose his or her job.

A national trustee of NUATE, Comrade Okunbor Hycent, blamed the malicious report on some miscreants who want to capitalise on the strike to achieve their own agenda, saying the write up by the miscreants identified him as a branch Chairman, but the fact is that he remains a national trustee of NUATE.

Regarding a separate letter reportedly sent to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), alleging that some airlines operate without proper weather information, the Branch Secretary of the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professional, Okorafor Ezena, suggested that such communications may have been authored by individuals within NiMet pursuing personal agendas. He likened these actions to opportunists exploiting legitimate protests for ulterior motives.

The union disassociated itself from the unauthorised statements, reaffirming its sole focus on staff welfare. The Branch Chairman of ANAP, Comrade Ambore, warned that legal action would be taken against individuals misusing the union’s name.

He criticised those issuing statements under the guise of the union as cowards, noting that the language used in the write-ups does not align with the union’s communication style.
