US-based Consultant, Dr. Adekoya tasks Nigerians on Clinical Trials

A United States based Executive Consultant and business woman with over 25 years of Clinical Research and Data Management experience, Olabisi Adekoya (PhD) has called on all Nigerians to learn about Clinical Trials free-of-charge at a Seminar in Lagos.

Clinical trials research is the experiment required by pharmaceutical and biotech companies to prove their drugs or devices are safe and effective in humans.

Speaking with journalists on Friday in Lagos, She noted that many Africans do not know about Clinical Trials or how drugs are tested and deemed fit for the market.

Adekoya pointed out that others may have traumatic experiences of past trials in the for participants, noting that It is important to know the pros and cons of the medications people take everyday.

She explained that many medications, treatments and devices enter the market every day and it is important to understand the process, be informed and learn about career opportunities in this field.

The Businesswoman explained that while the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) oversees the approval of drugs for marketing, Nigeria continues to rely heavily on imported finished pharmaceutical products that were likely not tested on Nigerians.

She further explained that the annual average has been approximately 31.5 new drug approvals by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) n the US over the past few decades.

According to her, The U.S. pharmaceutical market was valued at approximately $602.19 billion in 2023, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.15% from 2024 to 2033, noting that there is a growing need for hiring more clinical trials participants and talents.

Dr. Bisi pointed out that Africa is becoming the hub to reach out to for diversity and outsourcing talents by pharmaceutical companies and research organizations abroad.

Touching on the Seminar, She said Medical students, Nursing, Dentistry, Scientists, Engineers, Mathematicians, statisticians can be participants of the seminar taking place in February 7, 2025 at Birrel Avenue, Yaba, Lagos.

Adekoya explained that participants will understand the journey from discovery of drugs medicine and medical devices to the patients.

Dr. Bisi said many roles like Clinical data manager, medical monitors, data scientists, analysts, programmers, statisticians, mathematicians, drug safety and pharmacovigiance, and more will be explored at the event.

According to her, there will be hands on exercises, a strong foundation in clinical trials will be built and diverse career opportunities in a thriving global industry will be explored.

​The Consultant added that the Seminar will expose them to the discovery of how clinical research roles can lead to international earning potential.
