The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), has further clarified the lingering concerns about the presence of US troops in the country , saying that “they are in Nigeria purely for training assistance and advisory role.”

He assured that the Armed forces of Nigeria will be in command of all operations conducted within the nation’s territory.

The Minister said this when he presided over the maiden edition of the newly introduced Monthly Operational Briefing at the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday in Abuja.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), on February 16, 2026, confirmed the arrival of 100 United States military personnel and associated equipment at Bauchi Airfield.

It said the personnel are technical specialists serving strictly in an advisory and training capacity and not combat forces, adding “all training activities will be conducted under the authority, direction and control of the Nigerian Government and in close coordination with the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Speaking during briefing, Musa highlighted the various threats to national security and urged the Chief of Defence and the Service Chiefs to intensify efforts, and device new and implementable strategies to ensure timely eradication of terrorism, insurgency and banditry in Nigeria.

He, however, commended the professionalism, resilience, and gallantry of the Nigerian troops and reaffirmed the commitment of his ministry to supporting troops welfare and improving the operational efficiency of the Armed Forces.

The Special Adviser Media to the Minister, Col. Timothy Antigha (rtd) said in a statement that the event provided the minister the opportunity to review ongoing operations and provide strategic guidance to the Armed Services.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has charged troops of the 401 Special Forces Brigade, Makurdi, to remain dogged and relentless in sustaining pressure on all elements fomenting violence and criminality for selfish and nefarious interests.

He charged them to decisively deal with any individual or group threatening peace and stability, irrespective of status, influence or affiliation.

While applauding troops of Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE for their resilience, sacrifice and steadfast commitment in restoring security across affected communities in Benue, he noted the strategic importance of OPWS within the broader national security architecture.

He underscored the need to consolidate recent gains through intelligence-driven operations, enhanced inter-agency synergy and sustained community engagement, adding that operational success must be matched with professionalism, discipline and strict adherence to the Rules of Engagement in line with international best practices.

He noted that the troops’ perseverance in the face of persistent threats has not only degraded criminal networks but has also created a secure environment necessary for socio-economic activities to resume.

Shaibu described the safe return of internally displaced persons as a clear testament to the troops’ operational effectiveness and unwavering resolve.
