The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission and Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) New Era, yesterday, urged the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to adopt non-kinetic approach and address social challenges besetting the country to tackle insecurity.
Director-General of DAWN Commission, Mr. Seye Oyeleye and National Publicity Secretary of OPC New Era, Sina Akinpelu, who spoke with The Guardian in Ibadan, said urgent and drastic steps must be taken to curb the menace.
Oyeleye said: “We have all admitted that we are facing massive security problems. Just over the weekend, we learnt that 36 people were killed in Kaduna State. The weeks leading to the elections, there was lull on the security challenge. Suddenly, the election is over and there is a heightened security challenge, people are being killed.
“The first question the incoming government needs to interrogate is what is really causing this security issue? “How come there was a lull and what caused it to start again? Are there people specifically behind it? Are there people benefiting from the challenge? If there are people behind it, can they be unmasked?
“But that is just one part of it. The other part of it is that not all the security challenges are premeditated or planned. The issue is that some have taken to criminality owing to lack of anything to do. All of youths’ restiveness is coming from those who think they have nothing to live for. They have resorted to kidnapping and banditry because it is appealing.”
The DG of the Commission, while lamenting that the bomb that Nigeria was sitting on had exploded, called on the new government to invest in youths to curb insecurity.
On his part, OPC’s Akinpelu said the incoming administration must get the database of all Nigerians, prioritise their welfare and empower the youths.
He said: “Get the youths empowered and let them acquire technical skills to be gainfully employed.
‘’If Tinubu wants to achieve anything meaningful, he must amend the constitution to reflect the current realities. If the constitution is okay and welfare of the citizens is taken care of, there will be rule of law and insecurity will become a thing of the past, and all professionals would be honest in discharging their responsibilities.”
“There must be a database of all citizens to arrest anyone with a criminal record.”
