VC, don urge Medical Lab inductees to embrace AI, digital revolution to make maximum impact

The Vice-Chancellor, Lead City University {LCU}, Ibadan, Prof. Kabiru Adeyemo; the Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Science, University of Lagos, Prof. Oluyemi Akinloye and the Head Department, Medical Laboratory Science, LCU, Dr Mufutau Azeez, have urged the graduating students of the department to embrace Artificial Intelligence, the digital revolution and continuous learning in order to enhance their competence, productivity and professionalism.

The Vice-Chancellor, Lead City University {LCU}, Ibadan, Prof. Kabiru Adeyemo; the Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Science, University of Lagos, Prof. Oluyemi Akinloye and the Head Department, Medical Laboratory Science, LCU, Dr Mufutau Azeez, have urged the graduating students of the department to embrace Artificial Intelligence, the digital revolution and continuous learning in order to enhance their competence, productivity and professionalism.

They made the call during the second induction and oath-taking ceremony of qualified medical laboratory scientists which took place at the Adeline Hall of the university.

Eighty-seven graduating students took the oath and were inducted at the ceremony which was witnessed by many stakeholders in the medical science profession.

In his remarks, the VC, Prof. Adeyemo said with the emergence of medical technology, Artificial Intelligence, the revolution will assist medical laboratory scientists to perform their job effectively and efficiently.

The VC, therefore, charged the inductees to embrace the technological revolution in their practices.

The VC said: ‘’As a medical laboratory scientists play a tremendous role in the health sector. As a result of COVID-19, the work of medical laboratory scientists is evolving. We now have a lot of medical technology, people can now use Artificial Intelligence and technology to be able to address medical issues.

‘’It is also to let them know the need to uphold ethical standards and principles that govern the medical laboratory profession.

‘’Essentially, with the emergence of medical technology, Artificial Intelligence and technology will assist medical laboratory scientists to perform their job effectively and efficiently.

‘’We are charging them to embrace Artificial intelligence. We now have a modern laboratory to perform some experiments. We are in the era of digital revolution and Artificial Intelligence. This will definitely help enhance their competence and productivity, professionalism which we have taught them here. They are being charged to involve in continuous education programmes and contribute to the growth of medical laboratory science in Nigeria’’

Prof. Oluyemi Akinloye, who was the induction guest lecturer, charged the inductees to prepare for change, stressing that Digital Revolution and Artificial Intelligence have revolutionized medical practice.

The professor maintained that the advancement in technology would continue, charging them to continue learning.

The professor said: ‘’Digital Revolution and Artificial Intelligence have revolutionized medical practice. It is an evolution. Automation, Robotics, and computer science are all coming into laboratory practices. They need continuous learning and training and retraining”.

The HOD, Dr Mufutau Azeez, said the ceremony was anchored on the law that set by the Council that regulates the practice of Medical Laboratory scientists in Nigeria, which is the MLCSN Act Cap M25 Law of Federation of Nigeria 2004. ‘’The law emphasizes that before anybody can practise as a medical laboratory scientist in Nigeria after graduating from the university, the person must be inducted into the profession formally and take an oath that he will practice ethically and be given a licence to practice’’, the HOD explained.
