The Nigeria Police Force has vowed to review its deployment of Police Mobile Force (PMF) operatives to protect private citizens.

The Force PRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made the declaration while responding to inquiry about a group of policemen seen in a viral video guarding a man, who appeared to be on his way to slaughter a cow for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

Adejobi, who condemned the actions of the seven policemen in the video, promised to fish out the policemen for appropriate sanctions.

He stated: “This is condemned. We will fish out these men. It’s even disgusting. We have set up a committee to look into the process of withdrawing our PMF/tactical men from such services and use them for the announced Quick Intervention Squad.

“Deployment of policemen to individuals will surely be reviewed and regularised. When the committee submits its report, the Ag. IGP will act as fast as possible to implement the policy. We need more men to police than guard individual Nigerians. We can assure Nigerians of a better policing system in no distant time,” he said.

This is coming three days after the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, said PMF personnel would be withdrawn from VIPs escort and guard duties.

Egbetokun at a conference with the Police Tactical Commanders in Abuja, said the force would re-evaluate the responsibilities of the PMF to ensure their effective utilisation.

“Specifically, we shall effect the withdrawal of PMF personnel from VIP escort and guard duties. While the protection of dignitaries remains paramount, it is imperative that we realign our priorities to address the escalating security challenges faced by the nation as a whole.

“By relieving the PMF of VIP escort and guard duties, we can redirect their focus and efforts toward addressing critical security concerns that affect our communities.”

The IGP said a special committee headed by Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Operations had been set up to assess and advise on how the strategy could be implemented seamlessly.

According to him, the committee is expected to submit its report in two weeks after which further details will be made available.
