The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has expressed delight over decision of the House of Representatives to conduct an investigation into the Hydro-Carbon Pollution Restoration Project (HYPREP) contract scam.

It also declared that the way President Buhari’s administration handles the Ogoni Cleanup project contract fraud would determine how serious the anti-corruption war would be viewed by the world.

MOSOP President, Fegalo Nsuke, yesterday, in Gokana, commended the lawmakers for ordering a restriction on HYPREP accounts and urged them to ensure that Ogoni cleanup thieves are brought to book.

Nsuke noted that the agency’s scandal was a test for government, referring to penultimate week’s detailed report by Premium Times, which exposed the award of contracts to companies that were not registered.

He said: “At the time of pre-qualification assessment and award of contracts worth several billions of naira to firms that have nothing to do with any aspect of the cleanup activities, we were asking where the anti-corruption crusade was.”

He called for the immediate dissolution of the agency’s Governing Council, and demanded a probe into HYPREP’s activities, noting that the public would be shocked at the level of financial mismanagement.

“MOSOP was not completely surprised at the scandal, given that at the time the contracts were awarded, a member of HYPREP governing council was facing corruption investigations with the EFCC,” he said.

He said a thorough investigation into corruption in the agency was inevitable, not just to save the Ogoni cleanup programme, but to also rescue the dwindling image of President Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade.
