We must stop fake politics ahead of 2027, Wike Warns

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cautioned residents of the territory against what he described as “fake politics” ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging them to reject leaders who only surface during election periods.

Wike, who spoke during a “thank you” visit to the people of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) stressed the need for sincerity and accountability in the relationship between elected officials and the electorate.

Recalling his earlier town hall engagement with residents at the instance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Wike said he was mandated to restore hope at a time when insecurity and despondency had gripped parts of the council.

“At that meeting, I asked you what you wanted the government of President Tinubu to do for you. All the area councils nominated projects to be delivered within the first six months. One of the projects nominated by this area was the Saburi Road, and to the glory of God, that road has been commissioned,” he said.

The minister underscored what he described as a “symbiotic relationship” between leaders and the people, insisting that governance must be built on mutual commitment and trust.

“Relationship must not be one-sided. If you do for me, I will do for you. When you have fulfilled your part, I must not give excuses; I must fulfil mine,” he said.

He warned residents against politicians who, according to him, become visible only when elections approach.

“Never again should politicians come and tell us stories, and after voting, you won’t see them again. We must stop fake politics. We must know those who are sincere and those who are not,” Wike declared.

In apparent reference to aspirants who embark on sudden projects to court voters, the minister criticised what he termed “emergency contractors” and political actors who change their conduct for electoral advantage.

“Some people never showed up in certain communities while in office. Now that they want support, they suddenly remember the roads. That is not sincerity; that is vanity,” he said.

Wike maintained that his style of leadership is anchored on frankness, noting that he would not promise what he cannot deliver.

“I cannot play tricks with my people. I will tell you the truth. There are things I will do and things I will not do. That is my way,” he stated.

He further emphasised that the President does not want an FCT minister who remains confined to the office without engaging residents, adding that effective governance requires direct interaction with communities such as Ketti, Kabusa, Wasa, Chari and Saburi.

Chairman of AMAC, Christopher Maikalangu, in his remarks, commended the minister for his support before and during the council elections.

Maikalangu recalled that Wike maintained close contact with him on the eve of the election to ensure that the process was peaceful and successful.

He also noted that the minister visited several communities, including Ketti and Kabusa, to mobilise support.

“We thank you for the support you gave us. Today, we have won the election, and we say thank you,” he said.

The event was attended by political stakeholders from across the FCT, including party leaders and council officials, who expressed appreciation to the minister for ongoing projects and pledged continued support.
