THE Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, has described the tribunal judgment that sacked him and 20 other members as a mere opinion by the lower tribunal, expressing confidence in the nation’s judicial system.
Addressing journalists yesterday in Port Harcourt on the tribunal ruling, Ibani said as legislators, they believe that conscience not placed on the canvass of justice is unconscionable.
According to him: “I heard over the news that the Speaker and 20 others have been sacked by the election tribunal. No member, not even the Speaker, has been sacked.
“The lower tribunal gave judgment in their opinion. In their judgment, they said that there should be a rerun within 90 days. We have strong faith in the Nigerian state and its judicial system.
“We believe as legislators that conscience not placed on the canvass of justice is unconscionable. We believe that same principles in law should be applied in all circumstances.”
The Speaker, who argued that the whole world can attest that election was conducted in Rivers State on April 11 and as well, knows that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prepared for such election for a long period, further said: “I am still the Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly and the members still remain members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.”
