The leadership of the Labour Party (LP) in Enugu State said, yesterday, that the party has been accepted in the state, following several years of “misrule” by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state since 1999.

It also stated that the people have realised that the message of revolutionary activists, who joined the party, was different from regular politicians, who have held the state to ransom in the last few years.

State Publicity Secretary of the Party, Ibuchukwu Ezike, told The Guardian that the party has become a force in Enugu and remained a thorn in the flesh of the ruling party in the state due to its programmes.

He said: “The LP, as at today, has revolutionary activists and working-class persons, who are now interested in politics. You have a situation where people who fought military dictatorship and for change in the corridors of power refused to take up power, thereby allowing persons, who did not understand the struggle and difficulties we waged to hijack the political situation and began to benefit from it. We were chased and kept at bay while they continued to dictate the pace.

“Today, we are interested and some of us are leaders of the party; some of us are aspirants while some are members of the party. So, there is a difference between yesterday and today. That is why the party is like this; because in all its corners, there are persons who are credible who have joined the party as leaders.

“The victims of the political class since 1999 have seen there are differences in the way we talk and the way they talk, and this is why all sectors of the society – traders, workers, students, petty traders, artisans, motorcycle riders, bus drivers and everybody is beseeching the party.”

He stated that the PDP that has governed the state since 1999 has performed below average, thereby, putting the future of the people in jeopardy.”
