Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Dr. Solomon Arase, has said that modern crimes have become scientific; hence, the police, in tackling the menace, should go scientific too.

He noted that performing oversight functions as a commission was increasingly becoming vast and challenging, adding that all hands must be on deck to overcome the trend.

The retired Inspector-General of Police (IGP) spoke when he received a delegation from the Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria (CIFCFIN) at the corporate headquarters of the commission in Jabi, Abuja.

According to him, the commission should be properly equipped and personnel trained to succeed in its mandate of crime fighting.

The delegation was led by Dr. Iliaysu Gashinbaki, the institute’s pioneer president and Governing Council chairman.

Arase mentioned cyber bullying, criminal financial/banking attacks and other complex crimes threatening various sectors of the country’s democracy, stressing that the police and PSC would need to quickly step up to contain the emerging challenges.

Head, Press and Publicity, PSC, Ikechukwu Ani, stated: “Dr. Arase insisted that policing should be more visible at the local level, especially at the divisional centres that, he regretted, have been abandoned, creating a lot of ungoverned spaces, where non-state actors have since taken over.

“He said there is a need for continuous recruitment of police personnel to populate the communities, recover ungoverned spaces and restore security across the country, the commission will partner the institute to fight the menace of emerging financial and other crimes in the country.” Earlier, Gashinbaki had commended the PSC boss for the good work he brought to the commission, which he said was a product of his impeccable record in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), where he rose to the highest office of IGP.

He added: “The institute will be ready to work with the commission in police recruitment, promotion and discipline, and more especially investigation.”
