Women engineers seek better deal for girl-child in ICT sector
The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), yesterday, urged government and private sector to formulate policies and programmes that encourage the girl-child to play an active role in the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) sector.
It also made case for gender equality and empowerment of women at the national policy for ICT education. APWEN president, Dr. Elizabeth Eterigho, made the call on the occassion of the International Day for Girls in ICT.
The event, established by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), is to raise awareness, train, teach and promote young women professionals’ development.
She explained that there “is need to develop ICT literacy programmes, Internet and ICT certifications strictly for girls and women, impact the young girls with sustainable digital skills that can help the community in bridging the ICT skills gap and produce technology entrepreneurs through using ICT solution to develop business plans and mobile application to solve community problems.”
