The Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO) says it conducted free cancer screening for 1,918 persons across the country as part of activities to mark the 2021 World Cancer Day.

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr James-Wisdom Abhulimen, Head Corporate Communications, LAPO, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Monday.

According to the statement, the Executive Director of LAPO, Dr Honestus Obadiora, said the organisation created mass awareness on cancer and conducted screening across the country to mark the 2021 World Cancer Day.

Obadiora said the event featured rallies and distribution of information, education and communication materials on cervical, breast and prostate cancers to members of the public.

He said the organization was committed to empowerment of the poor and vulnerable people in the country through implementation of innovative financial and non-financial development programmes.

The Executive Director called on government at all levels to provide cancer treatment support for indigent individuals due to the high cost of management and treatment.

NAN reports that the theme of the 2021 World Cancer Day is “I am and I will” and the day is marked Feb. 4 of every year.
