Canadian soldier reported missing

A Canadian soldier serving in Latvia has been declared missing in the Baltic state, the Latvian military said Friday.

“Out of respect for the family’s privacy and in order not to interfere with the investigation, no further details will be provided at this time,” it said in a statement, saying a search had started.

The man was identified in a separate Canadian Armed Forces press release on Thursday as Warrant Officer George Hohl, a vehicle technician from 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron.

Hohl was deployed to Latvia as part of a Canadian-led NATO force and went missing on September 2 after last being seen in Adazi, which houses a military base for the force, the Canadian military said.

Operation Reassurance includes 1,500 troops stationed in Latvia, an EU and NATO member that borders Russia, as part of the Canadian-led NATO battlegroup that has been in Latvia since 2017.
