Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is fit to work again after hitting his head over the weekend, his medical team said Tuesday.

The 78-year-old spoke by telephone with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, host of a BRICS summit that the Brazilian leader had to miss.

Lula hit the back of his head in a fall in the presidential residence in Brasilia on Saturday and was admitted to a hospital where he received several stitches.

Lula “is fit to carry out his work routine,” an official medical report said after the leader underwent an imaging test that showed a stable result.

On medical advice, Lula canceled his planned trip to Russia on Sunday for the BRICS summit, but his office said that he would participate via video conference.

On Tuesday, Lula spoke with Putin for about 20 minutes.

“President Putin wanted to know about the health (of Lula) and regretted that he could not attend the BRICS summit, as did President Lula,” Brazil’s presidency said in a statement.

Putin is hosting around 20 world leaders — including China’s President Xi Jinping, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan — for the three-day gathering, which began on Tuesday.
