NUT tasks govts on infrastructure, others
In commemoration of the 2024 World Teachers’ Day (WTD), Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has congratulated teachers for their untiring efforts in nurturing the leaders of tomorrow.
This was as the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Lagos State wing, called on the federal and state governments to prioritise infrastructure and learning materials in schools.
Uzodimma singled out teachers in Imo and appreciated them for their services. Taking to his social media handle, the governor said: “Your tireless dedication to shaping the minds of our young ones remains a beacon of hope for our society. Through your commitment, you are nurturing the future leaders of our state, ensuring that knowledge is transferred with precision and care at every stage of their development. As a government, we recognise your invaluable contributions and remain committed to your welfare.”
Already, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and his Osun State counterpart, Ademola Adeleke, have both declared today as a work-free day for teachers in their respective states. Hence, schools are expected to resume academic activities on Tuesday.
Abiodun made this disclosure on Saturday during the celebration held at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, the state capital. The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Ogun State chapter, in a notice shared with its members on Sunday, reminded them about the holiday as declared by the governor.
A press statement issued by the Osun Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, indicated that the holiday is to identify with all teachers throughout the state on the annual occasion given their invaluable contributions to the growth of the education sector, not only in Osun and Nigeria, but the world at large.
NUT, however, has urged the government to provide adequate funding for the education sector. According to the union, adequate funding in the education sector will facilitate effective and better education policy formulation.
The National President, Audu Amba, at the celebration of World Teacher’s Day over the weekend, said: “There is a need to address the systematic challenges faced by teachers, to strengthen social dialogue and incorporate teachers’ perspectives into educational policy and decision-making process.
“Teachers need a greater voice in decision-making; they need more supportive environments and better working conditions to ensure effective education delivery, and to meet the needs of society and the demands of the 21st century.”
He noted that 23 states had implemented the new retirement policy of 65 years and 40 years in service for teachers, urging the remaining 13 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to implement it without further delay.
Chairman, NUT Lagos wing, Hassan Akintoye, emphasised the urgency of valuing teacher voices in creating a new social order for education. The guest speaker, Prof Oyekunle Oyelami of the Faculty of Education, University of Lagos (UNILAG), said a new social contract that would bring about improvement in education at all levels and that education should not be commercialised.
