Three students of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL) have received scholarship awards from the YBC-2003 Medicus Foundation, an initiative of the institution’s alumni class of 2003, as part of efforts to support academic excellence and give back to their alma mater.
The awards were presented during a ceremony at the college’s boardroom, where faculty members and students gathered to witness the recognition of outstanding scholars.
Speaking at the event, the Provost of CMUL, Professor Ademola Oremosu, commended the alumni group for sustaining its support for over two decades after graduation.
He noted that the initiative reflects a strong commitment to the advancement of medical education and urged the beneficiaries to maximise the opportunity, particularly the mentorship component attached to the award.
Coordinator of the foundation, Dr. Victor Fakeye, said the initiative was established out of a desire to contribute meaningfully to the institution that provided them with a solid academic foundation.
He added that the quality of education at CMUL remains globally competitive.
Fakeye explained that the beneficiaries were selected through a rigorous screening process that considered not only academic performance but also character and leadership potential.
He encouraged the awardees to strive for excellence and uphold the values expected of future medical professionals.
The 2025 award recipients include David Chukwuemeka Masha of Dentistry, Abe Temitayo Deborah of Medicine and Surgery, and Eledu Emmanuella, also of Medicine and Surgery.
The foundation has, so far, supported 15 students since its inception. One of its early beneficiaries, John Nwokocha, described the scholarship as impactful, noting that it has eased his academic journey and inspired him to maintain high standards.
He added that such interventions contribute positively to the development of Nigeria’s healthcare system by empowering dedicated and capable students.
Fakeye also expressed appreciation to the college management for its continued collaboration and reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to sustaining the initiative.
Other dignitaries present at the event included the Deputy Provost, Professor Daniel Odebiyi, and the Acting Director of Finance, Mrs. Mary Oyefusi, among others.
