President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, describing his 35 years in service as a legacy defined by excellence, professionalism and integrity.
In a goodwill message, the President recalled his first encounter with Egbetokun in 1998, noting that the retired police chief had, from the outset, demonstrated remarkable character and competence.
According to Tinubu, Egbetokun distinguished himself across operational, investigative and administrative duties, evolving over the years “from a promising officer into a refined, strategic leader.”
The President commended the former IGP’s steady rise through the ranks, attributing it to his unwavering commitment to discipline, justice and service to the nation.
He noted that Egbetokun’s tenure as IGP brought stability and professionalism to the Nigeria Police Force, particularly through efforts aimed at strengthening institutions and promoting intelligence-driven policing.
Tinubu observed that the retired police chief initiated key reforms designed to enhance the force’s capacity to tackle emerging security challenges, thereby consolidating public confidence in policing.
Reflecting on his journey, Egbetokun expressed gratitude to God, attributing his career milestones to divine grace rather than personal achievement.
“Today, I stand before God and His people, not to speak of achievement but to acknowledge grace,” he said, describing his appointment as IGP in 2023 as a testament to divine favour.
He acknowledged the support of President Tinubu and traditional ruler, Oba Ebenezer Olufemi Alani Egunjobi, noting that their guidance played a significant role in shaping his leadership path.
“I remain eternally grateful,” Egbetokun added.
On his retirement, the former police chief said he was not stepping away from service entirely but transitioning into a new phase of life guided by faith and purpose.
“I do not merely retire; I transition under divine direction, with peace in my heart and joy in my spirit,” he stated.
Egbetokun’s exit from active service marks the end of an era within the Nigeria Police Force, with stakeholders noting that his leadership helped entrench professionalism and set new standards in law enforcement.
