Yuletide: IG urges vigilance, cautions against use of fireworks
The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Solomon Arase, has urged the public to be vigilant during the yuletide and cautioned against the use of fireworks.
The call is contained in a statement issued by the Force Spokesperson, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Olabisi Kolawole, on Monday in Abuja.
The statement quoted Arase as warning citizens to be vigilant while receiving gifts from unknown persons that may pose as friends during the season to avoid explosive-laden hampers as gifts.
He also warned that the use of fireworks and other explosives during the celebrations, saying it could cause distraction that may further heighten fear of insecurity.
The IG enjoined citizens to shun all forms of violence and unlawful acts, eschew bitterness, hatred and rancour and go about their legitimate duties without fear of intimidation from any quarter.
He directed all zonal Assistant Inspectors-Generals and Command Commissioners of Police to ensure adequate security for travellers, picnickers across the country before, during and after the celebration.
Arase also directed command commissioners of police to personally ensure that worship and recreation centres, motor parks, shopping malls, among others, were adequately and effectively protected.
