A ghastly motor accident has left eight people dead, with 17 others sustaining varying degrees of injuries along the Katsin-Funtua route, Katsina State.

The incident which occured on Sunday afternoon at about 1:32pm, happened at Layin Kukah, in Bakori Local Government Area, and it involved two commercial vehicles, a Toyota Hiace Bus with registration number 14B 92 TR, and a Bajaj Tricycle with no registration number.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) by the state command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the deceased victims included two adult males, two adult females, three female children, and one male child.

The FIR, signed by the command’s Public Education Officer, DRC Shamsudeen Babajo, said those that sustained injuries included 15 adult males and two adult females, and that injuries sustained included fractures and deep lacerations

Babajo said a total of 25 persons were involved in the crash and that a rescue team that rushed to the area, arrived at the scene at approximately 2:04pm.

He said preliminary investigation revealed that the probable cause of the crash was wrongful overtaking, and that identity of the drivers of both vehicles could not be ascertained at the time of the report.

He said the rescue team conducted the rescue operation in collaboration with Community Watch Corps (C-Watch) from Funtua to Layin Kukah in Bakori council, and that the victims and corpses were taken to Bakori Comprehensive Hospital for medical attention and further check-up.

Babajo, however, added that the corpses were later transferred to the General Hospital Funtua.
