As Lagos State continues to evolve as Nigeria’s commercial and cultural heartbeat, the need for transformative leadership has never been more pressing. Among the numerous candidates who may vie for the position of governor in 2027, one name shines brightly: Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

Dabiri-Erewa’s impressive background makes her an ideal leader for Lagos. With a distinguished career in public service, she has demonstrated innovative leadership and a commitment to the welfare of Nigerians.

Her experience spans various roles, including Chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, and former member of the Nigeria Federal House of Representatives.

She has also been a strong advocate for the diaspora community, highlighting their significant contributions to Nigeria’s economy. In fact, she recently revealed that remittances from Nigerians abroad have exceeded $90 billion over the past five years.

Her passion for public service, leadership, and community development makes her a beacon of hope for millions of Lagosians. As a seasoned politician and public servant, Dabiri-Erewa possesses the expertise and vision necessary to usher in a new era of prosperity, inclusion, and sustainable development in Lagos.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa’s journey in public service began as a fearless journalist at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), where she gained nationwide recognition for her groundbreaking programme, Newsline. Through her work, she gave a voice to the voiceless, exposed societal injustices, and connected deeply with the everyday struggles of Nigerians.

Her transition to politics was equally impactful. As a member of the House of Representatives representing Ikorodu Constituency, she stood out for her advocacy and commitment to legislative excellence. Notable among her achievements was her active role in the passage of the Freedom of Information Bill. Currently, as the Chairperson and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Dabiri-Erewa has successfully mobilised the Nigerian diaspora as a critical asset for national development. Under her leadership, Nigeria’s diaspora engagement has yielded significant investments, partnerships, and opportunities.

Lagos, with a population exceeding 20 million, demands a leader who understands the complexities of modern governance. Dabiri-Erewa has consistently demonstrated foresight, crafting innovative solutions to complex challenges. As a trailblazer in media and politics, she has inspired countless women across Nigeria. Her rise to prominence proves that leadership knows no gender.

If I were the one deciding who gets the ticket for governorship in Lagos, I would strongly consider giving it to a capable woman. It is time for Lagos to break the status quo and elect a leader who not only understands the heartbeat of the city but also champions gender equity and inclusion.

Furthermore, if I were a leader of the strong opposition party, I would assume the ruling party might not embrace this forward-thinking step. I would seize the opportunity to grant the governorship ticket to a competent woman, leveraging the momentum of gender inclusion to connect with voters who are ready for change.

As governor, Dabiri-Erewa would implement policies to empower women, close gender gaps, and advance opportunities in education and business. Lagos, a global city, has untapped potential in its diaspora. Dabiri-Erewa’s expertise in mobilising the Nigerian diaspora could transform Lagos by attracting foreign investments, harnessing global expertise, and fostering international collaborations.

There is a popular saying that “what a man can do, a woman can do better.” Lagos has the unique opportunity to set the pace for gender inclusion in governance by electing its first female governor. We already have a woman speaker in the Lagos State House of Assembly, and it’s time to build on this progress by pushing for even greater representation at the executive level.

Dabiri-Erewa’s candidacy represents a defining moment to shatter glass ceilings and inspire women across the country to believe in their capacity to lead and transform society.

With over 60 per cent of Lagosians under the age of 35, youth engagement is critical to the city’s future. Dabiri-Erewa’s track record of mentoring young leaders and championing education makes her uniquely suited to empower the next generation of Lagosians. In a time of growing distrust in public officials, Dabiri-Erewa stands as a figure of integrity. Her transparent leadership style would restore faith in governance, ensuring that Lagos’ resources are utilised for the greater good of its people.

Imagine a Lagos where public transportation rivals the best in the world. Every child has access to affordable, quality education. Healthcare becomes a right and not a privilege. Technology drives governance, waste management transforms into wealth, and small businesses thrive. Dabiri-Erewa’s vision includes inclusive urban development, climate resilience, and cultural promotion. She envisions Lagos not just as Nigeria’s leading state but as a global model city for innovation, inclusion, and excellence.

It is time for Lagosians to embrace a leader with a proven track record of service, innovation, and compassion. Dabiri-Erewa represents a unique blend of experience and vision—qualities that can propel Lagos into a new era of progress and global relevance.

Lagos deserves the best, and Dabiri-Erewa is the answer. Let us rally behind her in 2027 and unlock the limitless possibilities of Lagos with her at the helm. Abike for Governor 2027—Because Lagos Deserves Excellence!
