Sir: Recently, the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, added free education to numerous free services enjoyed by the citizens in his state. Fortunately, it was an extension of the free education the governor has been giving to his Isuofia community.
Since assumption of office, the governor has always renewed the face of governance by giving the masses social inclusion. The governor started with massive employment, youth empowerment, free skill acquisition and training, free ante-natal services, free health care services and other dividends.
After the investment summit held in the state, the governor mapped out innovative ways to lessen the inequality in the society and offer every Anambra child equal opportunity for success.
At the inception of 2023/2024 academic session, the governor has announced free education from nursery level (kindergarten) to senior secondary level. The governor also considers providing school uniform, sandals and exercise books to some indigent pupils as he had done in his own community. This is coming at a time of increment of school fees by federal universities and unity schools. At the moment, there are very few states in Nigeria that offer their citizens free education.
Free education policy was first introduced in the Southwestern Nigeria by Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Although free education is in Nigeria constitution, political leaders have not willingly helped the poor masses in Nigeria to grow and develop. This accounts for millions of out of school children especially in northern Nigeria.
Moreover, free primary and secondary school education is a policy that aims to make education accessible to all children, regardless of their socio-economic background. The governor has taken a bold step towards development and growth of the state. Education is a fundamental human right, and everyone deserves to have access to a quality education, regardless of their socioeconomic background.
Free education will boost economic growth and development. It will create a more informed and engaged citizenry. It will help citizens to understand their rights and responsibilities; thereby more likely to participate in the democratic process.
In conclusion, the governor had not only made an announcement but he has put measures in place to fast-track the free education policy.
First, the governor has embarked on massive infrastructural development in all the public schools in the state. This will ensure that there is good environment and accommodation for all the students. He has equally beefed-up security in various schools. Also, the governor aims at employing more qualified teachers to handle the numerous students that would join public schools soonest.
Free education will also have a positive impact on the state’s economy. A well-educated workforce is essential for economic growth and development. By investing in education, the government is investing in the future of the state. Anambra indigenes are enjoined to bring their wards to different public schools for their qualitative education. The solution is here!
