Sir: I think all politicians should be made to read a Tale of two cities, and memorise the words and actions of Madme Lafarge, as a life lesson.

History should teach us lessons, but it never does. My only consolation sometimes is that the European nations also went through this kind of trauma centuries ago (I use them as an example because most of them, especially the Scandinavian nations have the highest standard of living in the world), and China, despite being ruled by brutal warlords for centuries, and despite being communist for decades is now a great world power, so if the East and the West can develop to that level, maybe there is hope for we in the middle.
