Tribute to Rear Admiral Sunday Abiodun Olukoya (rtd)
SIR: Rear Admiral Abiodun Olukoya CON, FSS, FWC was born 74 years ago in Ijebu Ode to the family of the Great Olukoya’s. He had Masters (MSc) in strategic studies from the University of Ibadan.
Olukoya enlisted into the Nigerian Navy in 1967 and retired after 32 years of meritorious service in 1999. While in the service, he had the privilege of serving at various levels in the Nigerian Navy.
He was once the ADC to the Military Governor of Western State, Admiral Akin Aduwo. He also served as the director of Naval Signals, the commanding officer of Ships and Shore Bases.
He later became the Defence Attaché, Nigerian Embassy, Yaoundé Cameroun. Olukoya was appointed as the military governor of the Old Ondo State which comprises the present Ekiti and Ondo states by the former President, General Ibrahim Babangida. He also served during the period as chairman of O’dua Board of Directors from January 1991 – December 1991.
He took over from Commodore Olabode George and handed over to Evang Bamidele Olumilua of blessed memory. Olukoya is an amiable personality, humble and a complete gentleman. He was the governor that named Ondo State as Sunshine State and reputed as a quiet achiever who helped in creating many existing local governments in Ondo and Ekiti states.
His other key appointments includes, port commandant, Apapa Port, January 1992 – June 1994; director of Administration, Nigerian Defence Academy, 1996 amongst others.
He retired from service as the director of Logistics, Defence Headquarters. As a retired officer, Olukoya continued to serve at different levels. He was appointed as the chairman, Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Auditing, Wrecking, Clearing and Sale of Residual Metals in Nigerian Waters by the Late President Yar’Adua.
Olukoya also sits as the board of chairman of Several Companies, DGU Consult Limited, HSE Nations (Organisers of AfriSAFE), Oakland and Johnson, amongst others. He also was the publisher of Real World Magazine, a magazine dedicated to celebrating God’s goodness.
He was a loving husband to Mrs. Oluremi Olukoya, a caring father and grandfather and a faithful follower of Jesus Christ.
Awards & Decorations include Forces Service Star (FSS), Defence Service Medal (DSM), National Service Medal (NSM), Republic Medal (RM), General Service Medal (GSM), Silver Jubilee Medal (SJM), Command at Sea Badge (CSB), Meritorious Service Star (MSS).
He was celebrated by Nigerian Tribune as one of Ogun State 35 Eminent Indigenes. (Nigerian Tribune Publication: Monday, March 28, 2011 Page.26). Farewell to a great administrator.
Olukoya is married to a wonderful woman, Remi and they have four children and grand children.
