Youth and proverbial head of an elephant

A few days ago, I stumbled into a group of youths agitating that the next President of Nigeria must be a youth.

Sir: A few days ago, I stumbled into a group of youths agitating that the next President of Nigeria must be a youth.

One of them was so daring and said that enough elderly people in the affairs of Nigeria as if youths of this nation have never participated in the politics of Nigeria.

This made me remind them that General Yakabu Gowon and many other military heads of state or governors were youths during the military era in Nigeria. I asked them what the population of Nigeria was when Gowon ruled Nigeria. And what is the population of Nigeria in the year 2022? I told these youths that Yoruba has a proverb, which says: Atari ajanaku kii s’eru omode, that is, the head of an elephant is not an easy burden for a youth.

The truth is that the political presidency of Nigeria is beyond the capacity of the youths of this nation as most of those agitating and aspiring to the president lacked visions and sincerity of purpose. The youths of this country have never been left in the dark in the political arena of this nation; they have always been part of the rot we have in the politics of the nation.

Many of them have been made governors, legislators both at local government, states and federal levels and we have seen the performances of many of them. Many of them are now under the watchful eyes of EFCC and ICPC and yet, they want to be president of Nigeria.

They have sold all our common wealth to themselves and the only cash cow left that we can call our own, they make it a campaign issue and boast that they will sell NNPC. They put all Nigerians into suffering without electricity supplies. The government lured Nigerians into the use of gas and later increased the cost beyond ordinary Nigerians.

Since 1990, the four petroleum refineries in the country are not working and every year the Federal Government either budgeted for the turnaround or maintenance and nothing came out of it. We continue to import refined oil into a country despite having crude oil. Honestly, those ruling Nigeria have no conscience. They should be ashamed of themselves.

The truth is that Nigerians are looking for an alternative political force outside APC or PDP, who are circulating among themselves to blindfold Nigerians. Enough is enough of swindling Nigerians of true democratic dispensation.

Again, I am always touched when I remember Ajaokuta Rolling Mill. For God’s sake, Nigeria’s political class are a wasteful lot. They are all thinking only of their own gain and not that of the nation. We have prayed for our politicians to have a change of heart and be ready to serve the nation or else we will hand them over to God for judgment.
