2027: Change of Vice President will spark tension, Jibrin cautions

Says Kwankwaso still has a chance to join APC
A member of the House of Representatives from Kano State, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has advised President Bola Tinubu to retain Vice President Kashim Shettima for his second term in office.

According to Jibrin, who is a member of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), choosing another vice president from the North could spark unnecessary tension and conflict, similar to what occurred during the 2023 campaign.

Jibrin, who spoke yesterday during Channel’s TV Politics Today, expressed concerns that those advising the President to consider an alternative running mate may not have his best interests at heart.

He emphasised that the current administration had made significant progress, including meeting revenue targets and avoiding domestic borrowing, which he said, demonstrates the President’s efforts to build a solid economic foundation.

He said: “It’s unfair to attribute the country’s security challenges solely to President Tinubu. He inherited a government with over 60 years of accumulated issues, and it’s unrealistic to expect that someone who has only been in office for two years is the cause of all economic and security problems. While it’s legitimate to express concerns and point out challenges, it’s essential to recognise that the President is working hard to address them.”

However, Jibrin has said that former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, still has the chance of joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said that the doors had not yet closed for the former NNPP presidential candidate to team up with Tinubu in the APC.

Jubrin, when asked what may be stalling Kwankwaso’s movement into the APC, said: “Even within the APC in Kano, you may have a situation where some vested interests would not want us to come in, maybe because of their own interest — somebody wanting to be governor or whatever else.”

According to him, the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which the NNPP former presidential candidate leads, is a strong group that cannot be pushed aside in the country’s political permutations.
