Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe has called for a clean, issue-driven campaign as he formally signaled the start of his re-election bid, urging supporters and political actors to shun insults, personal attacks, and divisive rhetoric ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a message titled “A Piece of My Thoughts,” addressed to constituents in Cross River North, Jarigbe struck a statesmanlike tone, emphasizing civility and unity despite an increasingly competitive political landscape.
“My dear good people of Cross River North, as we embark on this re-election journey, I thank you deeply for your unwavering support,” he said, while setting clear expectations for conduct during the campaign.
With the emergence of strong contenders, including former governor Ben Ayade, the senator cautioned his supporters against descending into mudslinging.
“I am aware that emotions run high. Our opponents, including my brother, former Governor, Senator Ben Ayade, are formidable,” he noted.
“I charge you: do not use uncouth words against any aspirant. No insult, no personal attack, no abusive language. We are better than that. Our campaign will be defined by ideas, not insults.”
Jarigbe also stressed the need to respect public office holders, both past and present, regardless of political differences.
“Whether you believe the former Governor performed or underperformed, that office commands our collective dignity. No man is infallible. Let us critique records, not abuse persons,” he said.
Beyond campaign conduct, the lawmaker reflected on the moral obligations of leadership, urging politicians not to lose sight of shared values and humanity in the pursuit of ambition.
“Let us pursue a healthy contest, one that reflects our proper upbringing as sons and daughters of Cross River,” he added, reminding supporters that “what endures is character, community, and how we treated one another along the way.”
He further challenged fellow aspirants to remain attentive to public sentiment, warning against political denial.
“I only implore all of us, aspirants, to listen to the voices of our people and not live in denial of the obvious,” he said.
In a strong appeal for unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jarigbe warned against post-primary divisions.
“Even as we further our divergent interests within this primary, we must never forget that after the votes are counted, we will still need each other. No ambition is worth destroying the conviviality we have shared,” he stated.
He concluded with a succinct message that captured the essence of his campaign: “Campaign with passion, but campaign with honour.”
