Adamawa APC chieftains protest against continued suspension of council boss

Commercial activities were yesterday shut down in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, as All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains and supporters called for the reinstatement of the suspended Yola-North Local Council Chairman, Alhaji Mahmud Abba.

Former Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Alhaji Hassan Turaki, who addressed the Adamawa lawmakers, urged them to use their constitutional powers to recall the suspended chairman and reopen the council’s secretariat closed for 10 months.

He said that seven months after the three months’ suspension of the chairman expired, Governor Jibrilla Bindow has refused to abide by the rule of law by recalling Abba to allow democracy to operate effectively in the council.

Turaki stated that the action of the governor had negatively affected the party’s slogan of change, pointing out that impunity has become the order of the day under Bindow’s administration.

The former Speaker, who lamented that the APC government has no moral rights to criticise the past government under People’s Democratic Party (PDP) when it is committing the worse illegality, said: “We are here to remind you that we cannot allow this impunity to continue. For 10 months, our Yola-North Local Council secretariat had been closed and the revenue of council constitute 70 per cent of the total state revenue. You can wonder the danger the action of the governor is posing to the people of the state.”

In the same vein, former Adviser to former Governor Murtala Nyako on Electoral Matters, Alhaji Usman Ibrahim, urged the Federal Government to call Bindow to order before he truncates democracy in the state. Ibrahim warned that the state stands the chance of losing the general elections if the governor is not called to order on time.

Meanwhile, Clerk of the House, Mr. Gban Senso, who received the letter of protest on behalf of the Assembly members, assured the protest ing APC chieftains that the lawmakers would speedily attend to the matter with urgency in the interest of the people of the affected local council.
