Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State.

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday dismissed rumours that he fathered a set of twins with a serving corps member and accused his political opponents of being behind the rumour to “destabilise” him.

Amosun, who spoke at a town hall meeting with a cross section of members of the public in Abeokuta, the state capital, on next year’s budget, appealled to his political opponents to play decent politics, insisting that no amount of falsehood against his person would intimidate or deter him from serving the people to the best of his ability.

There were strong speculations that the governor had had twins with a female corps member he befriended.Another rumour, which circulated in the social media recently, had it that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials invaded his Lagos private residence and seized some large sums of money in foreign currencies.

But Amosun, speaking at the June 12 Cultural Centre, venue of the meeting, said “both allegations are baseless and unfounded. They were cooked by my political rivals to smear my person.”

In a veil reference to his political rivals, the governor said: “They gather some people, sit in one corner and write rubbish, thinking that such will shake me, I don’t loose sleep over such things.

“I have married for almost 27 years now, I have my children. I do not have extra marital affair since then. How can I engage myself with unscrupulous things? I have called my children and told them not to bother themselves with any rubbish that might be published about me, because as a governor, I cannot have any private life again and I warned them to be careful of their actions and inactions.

“Thank God, my children are all matured. They understand what is happening. They are not bothered at all. “My wife even challenged me that she heard that somebody gave birth to twins for me. I told her that there was nothing like that. I told her not to bother herself on the matter because there was no iota of truth on the matter,” he told the large audience, including traditional rulers. He added: “I do not have plan of marrying another wife now. That is not part of my plan now. One wife is even a problem.

When I am 70 years old, I can then marry another wife, because I and my wife must have grown old and we will need a younger woman who can take good care of us.”He seized the opportunity to clear the air on the purported raid of his Lagos residence, saying the allegation was total falsehood.

Amosun described the allegation as nothing, but another in the series of political attacks to tarnish his image ahead of the 2019 general elections, saying there had been “a series of false and malicious accusations” on his person and attempts to pull him “down politically.”

“I told somebody few days ago that as 2019 general elections are fast approaching, the opposition had begun to write all sorts of false stories in the media, just to gain cheap political goals.

“If care is not taking, we would not see reliable and serious person to vie for political positions in Nigeria again because of character assassination that characterises the country’s political scene.”

Amosun recalled: “About 10 days ago, I do not know anything; it was my wife who brought to my notice the fake EFCC story. I got different telephone calls on the matter. “Even my mother-in-law also queried me, that she heard I kept money in foreign currency in a vault in my house in Lagos and I told her that there was nothing like that.

“I told my wife that she should not bother herself with such fake story. Some people, rather than using their valuable time for valuable things, they just sit down in a corner and concoct whatever they want in the media.”

He added: “Nobody can pull Amosun down. Nobody can destroy Amosun politically. Nobody can destabilise my government. I do not see them. I do not see whatever what nonsense they are writing. I do not reckon with them. I am not bothered with their fake and concocted stories.“Let me assure you, all those behind the fake story will go to jail. We are going to smoke them to serve as deterrent. They will go to jail.”
