APC now controls Zamfara Assembly – Chieftain

A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Zamfara State, Aminu Muhammad Kaura, has said his party has taken control of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, following a wave of defections that hit the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Kaura stated that the new political developments in the state have led to mass defections, pointing out that the PDP’s failure to win the recently concluded bye-election in Kaura Namoda South, Zamfara State, has indicated that the APC will reclaim its mandate in the 2027 general elections in the state.

“As of now, APC has the majority with 13 out of the 24 members of the State House of Assembly, while the PDP is left with 11 members,” he added.

“This shift marks a significant turning point in the political landscape of Zamfara State, as it strengthens the APC’s influence and weakens the ruling party’s hold on the legislative arm of government.

“Observers believe that the mass defection to the APC is largely influenced by the growing political alignment with the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, (Dr.), Bello Muhammad Matawalle, and Distinguished Senator Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari, both of whom have been consolidating their support base across the state.

“With this new majority, the APC is now strategically positioned to influence key legislative decisions and shape the political direction of Zamfara State, particularly ahead of the forthcoming 2027 general election.”

Meanwhile, the PDP in Zamfara has condemned a statement by the APC in the state, stating that the ruling party at the federal level is desperately trying to discredit the economic reforms and financial transparency of Governor Dauda Lawal.

The PDP leadership said, “It is laughable that the same APC government that looted the state dry for eight consecutive years without any trace of accountability is now pretending to care about the welfare of Zamfara people.”

In a statement by State PDP Publicity Secretary Haliru Andi, the governing party said the recent statement by the APC “is not only a display of political frustration but also a clear indication that the party remains bitter over the massive success of Governor Dauda Lawal’s ongoing reforms, which are blocking all their previous leakages and corrupt channels of siphoning public funds.”

The statement added: “The malicious claim by the APC that Hajiya Rakkiya Ahmad Dodo ‘receives N300 million monthly’ is a complete fabrication and a shameful attempt to tarnish the image of a hardworking public servant.”
