Assembly orders councils dissolution in Nasarawa

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has directed the state governor, Tanko Almakura, to within a week, dissolve the state’s Interim Management Committee (IMC) in the 13 Local Government and 18 Development areas of the state.

Speaker of the Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe Abduallahi, gave the directive after Alhaji Saidu Galadima, Chairman, House committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, moved a motion of dissolution. Abduallahi also called for a fresh election into the councils to bring the government as soon as possible, to the grassroots.

“This motion is timely due to the fact that the tenure of the state’s Interim Management Committee (IMC) members is coming to end on the midnight of 24th July.“I therefore move this motion that the House should finally resolve that the Executive governor of Nasarawa State, Tanko Almakura, should put in place, machineries for the conduct of election of local government chairmen and councilors to run the affairs of the third tier of government.

The Speaker assured the people of the lawmakers’ commitment to continue to enact laws and pass resolutions that have direct bearing on the lives of the people of the state.

Galadima said that the dissolution of the IMC would compel the governor to set up machinery in place for the conduct of council polls in the state.Abubakar Imam, (APC, Lafia Central), who seconded the motion said it was for the interest of peace and political development of the state.

The Assembly unanimously supported the dissolution and urged the executive to comply with immediate effect and commence the process of organising council election in the state.
