•Senator Nnamani’s Inclusion Stirs Concerns In Enugu
Indications have emerged that the presidential standard bearer of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has started exploring the possibility of inclusive administration with the expanded APC Presidential Campaign Council.
There was a mixture of surprise and disappointment, when the APC Presidential Campaign Council released a list of 422 persons, including non-members of the party, but with the name of Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo overtly missing.
Although the list contained the names of President Muhammadu Buhari and that of the party’s National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, as chairman and deputy chairman (II) respectively, Osinbajo’s name was conspicuously missing.
Also, the list elicited concerns in Southeast geopolitical zone with the inclusion of two bigwigs of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), namely, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani and former Deputy National Vice Chairman of PDP, Nze Fidelis Ozichukwu.
Senator Nnamani’s inclusion reignited concerns that the war of words between the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike and the PDP presidential contender, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has continued to balkanise the opposition party.
It could be recalled that while the Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, sided with Wike, the former governor, Nnamani identified with the Atiku camp to the extent that he was among those mouthed as possible presidential running mate for Atiku.
Ever since the list of those appointed into the expanded campaign council was released by the council’s secretary, Hon. James Faleke, it has been receiving reactions from Nigerians, especially against the background of internal squabbling over the composition.
Reacting to the absence of Osinbajo’s name on the list, a member of the council, who pleaded anonymity, explained that the Vice President had announced his aversion to the Muslim-Muslim ticket as such there was no way to involve him in the campaigns.
Another source disclosed that Tinubu has not forgiven Osinbajo for daring to contest the APC presidential ticket with him during the June 8, party convention.
He stated: “The omission of Osinbajo name has got nothing to do with the idea that he betrayed his godfather at the primaries. It has to do with his opposition to the Muslim -Muslim ticket.
The VP has not supported the ticket, because in his view, he wanted a balanced ticket that would be fair and just to Christians. So, you don’t expect him to be actively involved in the campaign when he is not comfortable with the Tinubu / Shettima joint ticket arrangement.”
But, in release, the spokesperson of the campaign council, Mr. Festus Keyamo, explained that President Buhari specifically asked that the VP and the Secretary to the Federal Government (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha, should be left out to ensure the smooth running of the administration.
Keyamo stated: “Our attention has been drawn to some stories making the rounds that there may be something amiss within the family of the APC as the name of our own revered and respected Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo 9SAN), is not included in the list of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council.
