• Leaders reject chairman’s suspension by group loyal to Lawal
Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State have resolved to adopt a consensus option for the emergence of new executive committee members expected to manage the affairs of the party at the ward and local council levels in the next four years.
The national leadership of the party had announced Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the date for the commencement of its congresses in about 30 states across the country, including Oyo, while the party also published guidelines for the conduct of the exercise.
In a statement yesterday, the Oyo APC disclosed that proactive steps were being taken to ensure that the conduct of its congresses was done to further solidify the existing unity and harmony within its fold, “as against what was experienced in 2018 and 2022, which eventually affected its chances in the 2019 and 2023 governorship and House of Assembly polls.”
“Meanwhile, the leadership of our great party has set up a five-man peace committee to be led by Fatai Ibikunle and this special committee is saddled with the responsibility of mediating where concerned stakeholders are unable to come up with a consensus list of executive committee members due to one reason or another,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Sokoto State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected the appointments of Abdullahi Maigwandu and Aliyu Rabah as Chairman and Secretary of the party’s membership, mobilisation, revitalisation and registration committee in the state.
The party’s Chairman, Umar Faruk, while addressing journalists yesterday, warned that the party might go to court if the decision is not reversed.
Relatedly, the Ogun State chapter of the ADC has suspended its State Chairman, Dr Femi Soluade, following a unanimous vote of no confidence passed against him by the State Executive Committee.
The decision was reached at a meeting of the SEC held at the party’s state secretariat.
In a statement by the Office of the State Publicity Secretary, the party said the suspension followed “extensive deliberations” over numerous allegations levelled against Soluade, including his alleged role in the disruption of a governorship declaration event.
According to the statement, all local council chairmen present at the meeting, alongside members of the State Executive Committee, endorsed the vote of no confidence, describing it as a collective and unanimous decision of the party’s leadership structure across the state.
However, efforts to reach Soluade for his reaction to the allegations and suspension were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the South-West leadership of the party has kicked against the suspension of Soluade, stressing that the decision was unconstitutional, invalid and without any effect.
According to a statement by the National Director of Communication and Programmes, Babatunde Oke, the zonal leadership, under the coordination of Rahman Owokoniran, has rejected the alleged suspension of the chairman.
The zonal leadership accused the group of not following the party’s constitutional process, noting that only the authorised body of the party, in line with the party’s constitution, could suspend and discipline elected officials.
