Councillors suspend Niger’s only female LG chair over ‘gross misconduct’

•C’River council boss reportedly served impeachment notice
The legislative council of the Bosso Local Council of Niger State has suspended its chairman, Ladidi Bawa Bosso.

The only female council chairman out of the 25 councils, under the All Progressives Congress (APC), had earlier served her second term under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Bosso is the second chairman suspended from office after the Chanchaga council chairman was fired a few months before the expiration of their tenure in November this year.

A communique on her suspension read in part: “Pursuant to the provisions of the Local Government Laws of Niger State, and following due process, the Bosso Local Government Legislative Council, at its duly convened sitting of today, Tuesday, 26th August, 2025, considered a motion on allegations of gross misconduct against the Chairman of Bosso Local Government Council, Hon. Ladidi Rakiya Bawa Bosso.

“Upon deliberation, and in strict compliance with the law, a vote was taken. Out of the total membership of the Council, seven (7) Councillors constituting the statutory three-fourths (3/4) majority voted in favour of suspension.”

ALSO, the legislative arm of the Yala Local Council of Cross River State has initiated impeachment proceedings against its Executive Chairman, Dr. Fred Okem, over allegations of gross misconduct, financial impropriety, and administrative negligence.

In a formal notice signed by 14 councillors, the lawmakers expressed a vote of no confidence in the chairman, citing various violations of the Cross River State Local Government Law No. 2 of 2007.

The allegations include misappropriation of council funds, execution of substandard projects, most notably the renovation of the legislative chamber, allegedly carried out without legislative input at an undisclosed cost, and failure to submit income and expenditure reports to the council.

Further accusations levelled against Okem are obstructing legislative oversight by preventing heads of departments from appearing before the council, refusing to reside within the local government area as required by law, and implementing policies without proper consultation.

The lawmakers claim he sidelined the legislative arm in both budgetary and administrative matters, allegedly turning the council into a “family affair”, and using government accounts to secure loans for personal projects.

They also accused him of failing to hold regular executive committee meetings, failing to release funds for furnishing councillors’ offices nine months after their inauguration, and allowing what they described as the “overbearing influence” of his wife on local governance.

The impeachment notice has reportedly been circulated to key stakeholders, including the Deputy Governor, members of the State House of Assembly representing Yala I and II, the Cross River State Local Government Commission, and the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, in a swift reaction, the chairman denied knowledge of any impeachment notice, dismissing reports on social media as false and misleading in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Unah.
