Says it has recovered from flood incident

Ahead of the Edo State governorship election, the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, yesterday, said that the Commission has made significant progress in recovering from the flooding incident that occurred in its state headquarters, in Benin City, two months ago.

Yakubu, who disclosed this at the third quarterly consultative meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Abuja, assured that the incident would not affect the forthcoming September 21 election in the state.

Recall that the flood, which occurred in May, affected some of the voter enrollment machines configured for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in the state.

“I am glad to report that we have recovered from the torrential rainfall that resulted in the severe flooding of our state headquarters in Benin City two months ago. The damage to the physical infrastructure, as well as movable and immovable facilities are being fixed or replaced. We have delivered additional Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines to Edo State for the training of election duty personnel, as well as contingency for Election Day support,” Yakubu stated.

The INEC boss further disclosed that the final voter registers for the forthcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states are being finalised, following the conclusion of the CVR, display of the register for claims and objections by citizens, as well as further data clean-up using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).
