Farounbi flays FG as operatives temporarily detain Sowore
Elder statesman and former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines, Dr Yemi Farounbi, yesterday, flayed the Federal Government for detaining the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, upon arrival to Nigeria from the United States.
Sowore, who disclosed his detention in a post on his X handle (formerly Twitter), yesterday morning, also said he was released few minutes later.
Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow protest, said officials of the Nigerian Immigration Service seized his passport and told him they had orders to detain him.
“I had just arrived in Nigeria from the USA to the MMIA in Lagos; upon reaching Nigerian Immigration, my passport was seized, and they told me they had orders to detain me.
“This is not unexpected because I have always known that it is part of the broader clampdown by the fascist @officialAbat regime on dissent and their fear of the upcoming #FearlessINOctober revolt.
“In case this becomes another prolonged and protracted detention, I urge our citizens to ensure they all stop tyranny by all means acceptable and necessary, by engaging in the planned series of direct actions slated for October 1 and beyond,” he wrote.
Meanwhile Sowore has disclosed that after he was released, though informed that one of his bags was missing.
“Well I am back home but it was because when I left in March and also in May, I did make a promise that I will be back.”
