The proposed constituency delineation released in Delta State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is creating bad blood as the Itsekiri nation vehemently rejected it.
INEC’s proposal was released at the weekend in Asaba, Delta State, following the order by the Supreme Court to delineate Warri Federal Constituency. The report was received by Victor Okumagba, Dr. Andrew Igban and Dr. Joe Bisina on behalf of the Urhobo, Itsekiri and Ijaw ethnic nationalities, respectively.
But a group, Itsekiri Leaders of Thought in Warri, Delta State, has kicked against the proposed ward delineation report in the state. The group’s secretary, Amorighoye Mene, who addressed newsmen yesterday in Asaba, said they would challenge INEC on the delineation in the Warri Federal Constituency.
The secretary said they had expected INEC to take into consideration the voting strength of various ethnic groups that make up the area.
According to him, the Itsekiris, Urhobos Ijaws and other mixed-up demographic areas would have been taken into consideration while delineating the wards and polling units.
He said if INEC is allowed to implement the proposed wards, the Itsekiri people would not get fair representation anywhere.
He called on the electoral umpire to reflect on the issues to ensure fairness based on the number of registered voters from each of the areas.
Apparently piqued by this development, the angry Itsekiris called on President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly for quick intervention, ensuring that the delineation process is “transparent, inclusive, and just”.
