Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, yesterday revealed that the cost of a major road contract embarked on by the last administration in the state was inflated to N3.68 billion.

He added that his administration has recovered and saved N1.1 billion after reviewing the contract awarded by his predecessor, Alhaji Ramallan Yero.

In a statement issued by the Media Aide to the Governor, Mallam Samuel Aruwan, after the security council meeting, he said that El-Rufai re-awarded the road contract to Mothercat Construction Company after a major scrutiny of the contract sum earlier awarded by Yero’s administration.

Aruwan said: “The Kaduna State government has saved N1.1 billion on the Kawo road contract. This was announced by Hassan Usman Mahmud, the Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport after the weekly Executive Council meeting.”

According to Aruwan: “Mahmud said the government was able to recover the N1.1 billion following a renegotiation of the contract awarded by the previous government in December 2014 to Mothercat at the sum of N3.685 billion.”

He explained that: “The contract was to expand the 5.125 kilometers road from Kawo flyover to Luggard Hall roundabout,” adding that:“Following the review of the project, the contract sum was reduced to N2.504 billion.”

The Commissioner for Works said the State Executive Council approved the new contract sum, and commended the efforts of the government by saving N1.1 billion for the state.

The state government in September 2015 ordered the suspension of work on the project in order to review the rates and the scope of work on the contract.
