Nenadi Usman, National Chairperson of the Labour Party (LP), has confirmed that the party has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to southern Nigeria.
Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja, Usman said the decision was already settled within the party.
“We have one clear decision: we will not field any aspirant from northern Nigeria. The position is zoned to southern Nigeria,” she stated.
“So, any northerner seeking to contest will not be accepted.”
Usman, however, declined to name potential candidates, emphasizing that the party would follow internal democratic processes.
“As for who will contest, I cannot say now, because that would undermine democracy. The candidate will be whoever emerges through the primaries,” she explained.
“We do not go out to persuade anyone to use the Labour Party to contest elections. That has never been done.”
On internal disputes, Usman noted that a court case challenging the dissolution of the party’s national caretaker committee had been dismissed.
“To God be the glory, the case was thrown out for lacking merit. The judge stood on truth,” she said.
She also indicated that the party might review the dates for its upcoming congresses due to a surge in membership.
“If we stick to the current schedule, we risk disenfranchising many members,” she warned.
Addressing security concerns, Usman revealed that the party had petitioned the police following an attack on its office, expressing confidence that those responsible would be held accountable.
“I am confident that all those involved will be brought to justice, which will serve as a deterrent,” she said.
Finally, Usman urged members to leverage digital registration, noting that manual processes should only be used by those in remote areas without access to mobile technology.
