LP draws lessons from 2023 polls, rebuilds for 2027

Senator Nenadi Usman

Labour Party (LP) has launched what may be its most consequential internal reset yet — a sweeping grassroots rebuilding effort borne out of lessons from the 2023 general elections, and driven by a renewed determination to emerge stronger in 2027.

At a high-level strategic summit in Abuja, themed “Reuniting the Labour Party: Consolidating Strength for Sustainable Political Impact,” the party’s National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, delivered a strikingly candid assessment: “Labour’s greatest weakness in 2023 was not electoral technology or transmission controversies — it was structure.”

She added: “Without knowing who your members are, where they are, how many you are, you can never plan well.”

While rival parties locked horns over electronic transmission of results, Usman insisted that LP’s failure was more fundamental — it did not fully organise, document, and deploy its natural grassroots strength.

“That is not our problem. Our problem is to ensure that we register our members right from the grassroots,” she said.

In one of the most sobering moments of the summit, Usman admitted that the party’s post-election court battles exposed structural gaps that could not be ignored.

She maintained that the LP’s true strength was always there — just underutilised.

From the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and affiliated unions, Usman argued that Labour possesses what no other political party does — an organic, nationwide workforce presence, stating: “What was missing in 2023 was coordination and structure.”

She also addressed internal leadership disputes that previously rocked the party, describing them as resolved and urged aggrieved members to return through democratic channels.

Adding political weight to the summit was Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who sent a strong message of unity and consolidation through his deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu.

The governor described the summit as a defining moment for the party.
