Makinde urges PDP members to return, fix ‘leaking roof’ together

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has appealed to politicians within the opposition coalition, particularly members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to remain committed to the Party and work collectively to resolve internal challenges rather than defecting.

Speaking at the end of the PDP South-West Zonal Caucus meeting in Ibadan on Friday, Makinde likened those abandoning the Party to homeowners walking away from their houses due to a leaking roof.

“You can’t abandon your house because of a leaking roof,” the governor said, urging coalition partners and disillusioned members to return and join efforts to rebuild the Party from within.

He argued that the PDP remains a party with strong foundations despite ongoing difficulties and internal disagreements. “Like any structure, it may face wear and tear. It is our responsibility to fix the leaks, strengthen the foundation, and keep the house standing for the people of this country,” he added.

Makinde also acknowledged the sacrifices made by members and leaders of the Party across the region, describing their commitment as vital to the PDP’s revival and future electoral success. He reaffirmed his readiness to collaborate with key stakeholders to reposition the PDP ahead of national and state elections.

“Let us fix the roof together and keep this house strong for the future,” he said in his closing remarks.

The meeting, which gathered South-West PDP leaders, was part of ongoing efforts to foster internal reconciliation and present a united front amid Nigeria’s shifting political alliances and growing speculation over potential defections within the opposition bloc.

Makinde’s comments come amidst the recent defection of some major PDP members, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Other notable politicians in the ADC are Rauf Aregbesola, Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, amongst many others.
