More leaders have dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the resignation of Rt. Hon. Isa Ashiru, former gubernatorial candidate in Kaduna State in 2023.
Ashiru announced his resignation from the party on Monday, citing persistent internal crises and divisions that hindered active participation, as detailed in a formal letter dated Friday, March 27, 2026, and addressed to the Ward Chairman, PDP, Kudan Ward, Kudan Local Government, Kaduna State.
“I write with a deep sense of humility to formally notify the leadership of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party effective from today the 27th day of March, 2026,” Ashiru wrote.
“After a careful reflection over the persistent internal leadership crisis, conflicts, rancor and divisions within the PDP, it has become increasingly difficult for me to continue to participate actively as a member of the party.
“This decision is personal and taken in good faith. Please kindly accept this letter as my formal notice of resignation from the Party (PDP).
“I remain committed to the service of our people and the pursuit of unity, progress, and good governance.”
The businessman and traditional titleholder (Sarkin Bai Zazzau), represented Makarfi/Kudan Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and lost the 2023 election to the ruling governor, Uba Sani of the All Progressives Congress (APC) amid the PDP’s internal turmoil.
The move signals his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), drawing welcomes from supporters eyeing the 2027 elections, with reactions highlighting hopes for renewed opposition strength in Kaduna State against the APC-led government.
The PDP is facing significant attrition, with key leaders and lawmakers in Taraba, Ondo, and Ebonyi states defecting to the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
Driven by internal crises and shifts in its loyalty, including the departure of prominent figures, these moves have notably weakened the structure of the opposition party.
