Presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has commended Nigerians for their solidarity over a recent attempt on his life by hoodlums in Benin City, Edo State.
Obi commented on X following an attack on him and other members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their prayers, calls, and solidarity following the incident.
He stated: “I especially appreciate your support during this difficult time for the family of the distinguished elder and former Governor of Edo State, John Oyegun, who has served Nigeria honourably in various capacities, as well as for another former governor, Oserheimen Osunbor.
“Your support has strengthened my faith in our shared humanity and our collective hope for a better Nigeria. My deep gratitude is reflected in my renewed commitment to serve and build our nation.
“Experiences of lawlessness are not new to me. Years ago, the violence and insecurity in Anambra shaped my determination to seek the governorship of the state, convinced that leadership must restore order, security, and public trust.
“Today, the growing lawlessness across our country calls upon all men and women of goodwill to step forward, not in fear but with a sense of responsibility. As Plato reminded us, the price good people pay for refusing to participate in government is to live under the rule of bad people.”
A member of the House of Representatives, Billy Osawaru, has dismissed allegations linking the Edo State Government to Tuesday’s attack on Obi’s convoy, describing the claims as false and politically motivated.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that internal leadership and factional struggles within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) may be responsible for the reported shooting incident that occurred during a meeting of ADC leaders in Edo State.
While denying any involvement in the incident, APC described accusations linking it to the shooting as baseless, reckless, and politically motivated.
APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, in a statement yesterday, condemned the shooting and called on security agencies to carry out a thorough, impartial, and expeditious investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.
The APC faulted the ADC for accusing it of responsibility for the incident even before law enforcement agencies commenced investigations, arguing that such claims undermine due process and reflect desperation rather than maturity in political conduct.
According to the ruling party, the ADC’s description of the incident as an act of “terrorism” allegedly sponsored by the APC was “reckless, unjustifiable, and insensitive,” especially given Nigeria’s ongoing fight against terrorism and the sacrifices of security personnel across the country.
