The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned political leaders against scoring political points from the tragic killing of an Accord Party member in Esa-Oke, Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, Aderogba Ajayi by yet-to-be identified gunmen.
The chairman of APC Ward 7, Esa-Oke, Siji Olamiju, gave this warning while addressing a press conference in the ancient town.
On Tuesday evening, grief and anger swept through Esa-Oke after Ajayi, popularly known as Rogba and a member of the Accord Party, was shot dead.
The killing, which occurred at a junction in the town, heightened political tension in Osun less than two months before the August 15 governorship election.
Osun State Governor, Ademola and the ruling Accord had fingered the APC for the gruesome murder, calling on Police to apprehend the killers and their sponsors.
However, Olamiju, after extending the party’s heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, expressed concerns that there were growing attempts by political actors to exploit the tragedy for partisan purposes.
“The death of a young man should never become an opportunity for political point-scoring or propaganda. Such actions are insensitive to the grief of the bereaved family and detrimental to the pursuit of justice.
We are particularly concerned that certain individuals have hastily linked this unfortunate incident to politics without allowing the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to conclude their investigations. Justice can only be achieved through a thorough, impartial and professional investigation not through speculation, political rhetoric or media trials,” he said.
He also distanced the APC Ward 7 and the Director-General of the Osun APC Campaign Council and and House of Representatives member in Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Wole Oke from the incident.
According to him, they have absolutely no connection whatsoever with the circumstances surrounding the death of Rogba. “Attempts to implicate the party or Hon. Wole Oke are entirely baseless, politically motivated and unsupported by any credible evidence,” he maintained.
“We respectfully urge His Excellency, Governor Ademola Adeleke, and all public office holders to exercise restraint and allow law enforcement agencies to discharge their constitutional responsibilities independently and without interference or premature conclusions.
We also call on the Nigeria Police Force and all relevant security agencies to conduct a comprehensive, transparent and unbiased investigation by pursuing every credible lead and inviting all individuals whose testimonies may assist in uncovering the truth. This should include Erebe, Dele Ajayi, Barr. Idowu Akinshola, Abuga, Muri, Mewo White, and any other persons considered relevant by investigators. No individual should be exempted from lawful investigation, and no one should be presumed guilty without due process.
The circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident have generated public concern and varying accounts within the community. While different narratives continue to circulate, we firmly believe that only the outcome of a credible investigation should determine the true facts surrounding Ajayi Rogba’s death,” he added.
The party leader appealed to all residents of Esa-Oke and the general public to remain calm, refrain from spreading unverified information, and cooperate fully with security agencies as they carry out their investigations.
“The APC remains committed to the rule of law, justice and accountability. We firmly maintain that whoever is found culpable after a lawful and impartial investigation-regardless of political affiliation, social status or influence-must face the full weight of the law,” he noted.
