Lagos Assembly chides gov over exclusion of councils, party loyalists from nominees’ list
Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed dissatisfaction for allegedly being sidelined and not given any ministerial slot by President Bola Tinubu.
Some of its leaders, who expressed anger at Tinubu, said the President’s ability to reward loyalty and political commitment was not demonstrated to Oyo APC in the selection of ministerial nominees.
They expressed displeasure over the nomination of former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Adebayo Adelabu, as ministerial-nominee, while no consideration was given to any member of the party.
One of their grouses is that Adelabu, who left APC to contest for the last gubernatorial election on the platform of the Accord Party (AP), is deemed inappropriate to be nominated whereas those who worked and spent their fortunes for APC were not recognised.
One of the leaders of Oyo APC, who claimed anonymity, said non-recognition of any member of the party was a deliberate slap on all stakeholders that the President did not deem it right to consider one of them.
According to him, “how do you explain a situation where other states have two or three nominees and Oyo APC cannot even get one?” Another leader of the party said: “It is very risky to make any comment now. The truth is that we are not being treated well in Oyo. I wonder how Adelabu would use the ministerial slot to build Oyo APC.”
MEANWHILE, a former Deputy National Youth Leader of APC, Afeez Bolaji Repete, has appealed to angry members of the party to note that no part of the party’s and Nigeria’s constitution that mandates the President to chose his ministers among party members.
Repete, however, pleaded with Tinubu to consider any member and or members of the party in Oyo for other appointments. Publicity Secretary of the party, Olawale Shadare, said Oyo APC has nothing against the President since it is his prerogative right to chose those he wants to work with.
However, a source in the Presidency has dismissed the foul cry among Oyo APC members. He said: There are still rooms for others to serve in various capacities. Those who understand governance know that to be made a minister does not signify importance, but depends on the opportunity accorded the person by the President.”
SIMILARLY, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, yesterday, pleaded with his colleagues who expressed dissatisfaction with the list of commissioner-nominees sent by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for screening and confirmation.
While some lawmakers lamented exclusion of some parts of the state in the nomination, some urged the House to take another look at the list and others said the nominees’ local councils should be attached to the list.
Obasa, who directed the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, to write the governor, requesting for the nominees’ local councils, reminded his colleagues that the governor has the prerogative to nominate those to work with him.
