PDP candidate faults Cross River Assembly over executive influence

Cross River Assembly

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Yakurr I State Constituency, James Ibor, has criticised the Cross River State House of Assembly, describing it as an extension of the executive arm of government.

Ibor, who spoke shortly after the affirmation of the PDP governorship candidate in Calabar on Sunday, alleged that financial inducement had weakened the legislature’s oversight responsibilities and compromised democratic governance in the state.

The legal practitioner and civil rights activist said legislative institutions across the country had gradually abandoned their constitutional role and now operate largely in the interest of the executive.

“I have observed over time that the legislative house, from the local government to the state and National Assembly, has become an appendage of the executive arm,” he said.

He alleged that executive bills were often accompanied by inducements to ensure smooth passage, adding that disagreements among lawmakers were usually linked to disputes over such benefits.

According to him, the absence of robust debate and scrutiny of government policies in the Cross River Assembly has contributed to the state’s growing debt burden.

“There is no robust argument, examination or review of proposals. Everything is simply ‘the ayes have it,’ while the state continues to sink deeper into debt,” he stated.

Ibor accused some lawmakers of placing personal interests above public service, alleging that many focus on securing loans and acquiring property shortly after assuming office.

The PDP candidate, however, dismissed concerns that he could be isolated as an opposition voice in the 25-member assembly if elected.

“My mantra has always been taking the battle to the enemy camp. I know there will be resistance, but I will not be distracted,” he said.

He added that support from civil society groups, constituents and advocates of good governance would strengthen his position in the assembly.

Speaking on the PDP governorship candidate, Sir Arthur Jarvis Archibong, and another party stalwart, John Ifere, Ibor expressed confidence in their leadership capacity, citing their private sector experience.

He urged voters ahead of the 2027 elections to prioritise competence over monetary inducement.

“My advice to the electorate is to vote for capacity and not because of temporary handouts. If we continue with the same style of politics, the economic hardship people are experiencing today could become worse tomorrow,” he said.
