The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF) has raised concern over the state of governance in Nigeria, warning that the country is fast drifting towards full-blown dictatorship, even as citizens grapple with worsening poverty and hunger in the midst of plenty.
The forum, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, in a statement signed by its Director-General, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, stated that the disconnect between Nigerians and the constituted authority had deepened, leaving the people disillusioned with leadership.
The statement, issued on Friday to mark this year’s Eid-el-Maulud celebration, extended warm felicitations to Muslims across Nigeria and the world, while urging reflection on the values of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
The forum said, “Today, our country is at a crossroads as Nigerians get disconnected from the constituted services they deserve. As we inch daily to full-blown dictatorship with its attendant abuse of power, and citizens live in abject penury in the face of plenty, leadership is once again called to urgently address insecurity, our compromised judicial system, failed economic policies resulting in intolerable hunger, poverty and unemployment.”
The governors urged leaders at all levels to embrace values that inspire hope and rebuild trust in governance, stressing the need for “public service with accountability, kindness without expectation, humility, and the pursuit of truth.”
They described the Eid-el-Maulud as a gesture of peace and solidarity, noting that the Prophet’s life and teachings of compassion, tolerance, justice and unity remain a guiding light to humanity.
“Let this day be a reminder of the values we should uphold and share to rebuild the faith of our citizens in our country. May your celebrations be filled with joy, prayer, and meaningful connection with loved ones,” the statement read.
The forum reaffirmed its commitment to working for a just, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria, even as it prayed for unity and strength for the nation.
